Guam Public Health STD/HIV Program
The Department of Public Health and Social Services (DPHSS) is pleased to announce that June 27, 2012 is National HIV Testing Day. The National Association of People with AIDS (NAPWA), in partnership with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and other national and local entities across the country are organizing National HIV Testing Day (NHTD).
“Take the Test. Take Control.” is this year’s theme for NHTD. CDC estimates one in five people with HIV are unaware of their HIV status. On Guam, 238 HIV cases have been reported to the DPHSS since 1985. A rise in syphilis cases so far in 2012 among males under the age of 35 who are sexually active is also a concern. Therefore, it is recommended that you take a test for both syphilis and HIV.
In an effort to reduce HIV and syphilis cases on Guam, the DPHSS STD/HIV Program is offering free HIV and syphilis testing at the Central Public Health in Mangilao, Room 156, first floor. If you test positive for HIV and/or syphilis, treatment and care are available.
